Pfäfers

The Baroque monastery church and the Old Baths of Pfäfers in the “ Taminaschlucht (Tamina Gorge) ” stand majestically in Pfäfers. According to a legend depicted on the ceiling of the sacristy, Saint Pirmin settled in the area around 721. He wanted to build a monastery in Marschlins, across the Rhine. A worker injured himself, whereupon a white dove carried the bloody splinter into the wooded hillside. Where the dove dropped it, Pirmin recognized the right spot for the monastery. The former monastery church is now a popular destination and a venue for various concerts in Pfäfers. Together with the mystical thermal spring gorge, the museums, and the restaurant, the Alte Bad Pfäfers is a natural and cultural attraction with a reputation that extends far beyond the region. Hiking through picturesque landscapes— Taminaschlucht (Tamina Gorge) , and the surrounding area are ideal for this and offer countless routes of varying difficulty levels. There is much to explore in the Pfäfers area. What had long been separated was united in June 2017: the Tamina Bridge connects the villages of Pfäfers and Valens at the entrance to the valley. The bridge’s arch spans the deep Taminaschlucht (Tamina Gorge) in an impressive manner. The bridge is considered the largest arch bridge in Switzerland and is definitely worth a visit.
