Friedau Castle and Haus zur Glocke

Friedau Castle and Haus zur Glocke
Friedau Castle and Haus zur Glocke
Friedau Castle in Zizers, built by Bishop Volkhart of Chur, was once a center of episcopal jurisdiction. Today it belongs to the district of Fünf Dörfer. The Haus zur Glocke, one of the oldest buildings, once served as the town hall.
The complex was built by Bishop Volkhart of Chur (1237-1251). The once mighty fortification was the center of the bishop's jurisdiction. Later, delinquents from the district of Fünf Dörfer were imprisoned in the castle. The castle was badly damaged in the village fire of 1897. Today, the castle is owned by the district of Fünf Dörfer. Structural safety measures were taken in 2001. One of the oldest still inhabited buildings in Zizers is the Haus zur Glocke. It was once an inn, to which Susten (warehouses with horse stables) were probably also attached. Later, the Haus zur Glocke served as the town hall for the district of Fünf Dörfer. It housed the district administration, the district office, the district notary's office, the debt enforcement and bankruptcy office and the guardianship authority. Today, the beautifully refurbished Haus zur Glocke is used purely as a residential building.
