Portaser Winery
The Portaser vineyard in Pfäfers lies at over 700 meters above sea level and offers a favourable microclimate for winegrowing. The old Roman trade route that runs through the vineyard is now a popular hiking trail.
Some of their vineyards lie at over 700 meters above sea level. This is unusually high for viticulture in eastern Switzerland. A good microclimate plays a key role in the Schwitter family's Pfäfers Portaser - both geographically and family-wise.
The old Roman trade route, known as the "Porta Romana", runs through the middle of the vineyard. It gave the "Portaser" its name and is now a popular hiking trail.
Viticulture in the "highest vineyard in Eastern Switzerland" is possible thanks to a favorable microclimate: countless boulders protect against the wind and store the sun's heat. The monks of the Pfäfers monastery discovered and used this centuries ago.
The farm, which stands right next to the ruins of Wartenstein Castle and St. George's Chapel, also includes a cattle farm with its own farm store and wine cellar.
