Gigerwald reservoir
The Gigerwald reservoir is located in the Calfeisental valley between rugged and steep rock faces that rise almost 2000 meters into the air. At the far end of the lake is the tranquil Walser settlement of St. Martin. At the front, the masses of water are held back by an almost 150 meter high, accessible dam wall. The Sarganserland KSL power plants have been producing 460 million kWh of electricity here every year since 1976.
The water comes from the Calfeisen valley and the neighboring Weisstannen valley, is collected in the Gigerwald reservoir and turbined in the Mapragg central reservoirs near Vadura and Sarelli near Bad Ragaz.
Guided tours of the Mapragg headquarters and the Gigerwald dam are available on request.
