Hike to the Waterfalls in the Weisstannental Valley
The Batöni Waterfall Arena is located in the Weisstannental valley in the holiday region Heidiland , and is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the canton of St. Gallen.
At an elevation of about 1,536 meters above sea level, the Piltschinabach Falls (81 m), the Sässbach Falls (86 m), and the Muttenbach Falls (45 m) plunge down a steep rocky escarpment. A 51.2-meter-long suspension bridge safely spans the confluence of the streams. The hike from Weisstannen, Oberdorf takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes one way (approx. 4.1 km, 532 meters of elevation gain) and passes through the Graue Hörner federal hunting reserve as well as the perimeter of the Sardona Tectonic Arena UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Directions & Parking
By public transportation
Take the train to Sargans, then take the PostBus (which runs several times a day) to the “Weisstannen, Oberdorf” stop. Traveling by public transportation is especially recommended on weekends, as parking space in Weisstannen is limited.
By car
From the Mels highway exit, follow the main road to the center of Mels; the route to Weisstannen is signposted from there (about 12 km from the Mels village square, on a winding mountain road). Public parking is available at the village entrance, across from the church, and along the Gufelbach stream. Since space is limited, it is recommended to arrive early on weekends.

Hiking Planning
Difficulty and Stamina
The hike is rated as moderately difficult (T2) and requires sure-footedness and a solid level of fitness, especially on the steep section leading to “Sässli.” It is suitable for sure-footed children with mountain experience, but due to the steep ascent, it is not suitable for toddlers or for those with strollers. Dogs are generally allowed; however, the grating on some of the bridges may be unfamiliar to some dogs.
Equipment
We recommend sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles for steep sections, and plenty of water and sunscreen. Since there are no places to stop for refreshments along the way, it’s a good idea to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the waterfalls.
Best Time of Year
The hike is only regularly accessible in the summer. The best time to visit is from May through September; in early summer, isolated snowfields may still block the trail in some places—you can check current conditions in advance on the hiking portal. Access to the Batöni Waterfall Arena is not possible during the winter months due to avalanche danger and potential rockfalls.
Weisstannen—A Starting Point Steeped in History
Weisstannen was settled by the Walser people as early as the 13th/14th century and remained accessible only on foot until the road to Mels was built in 1873. This long period of isolation has allowed the village to preserve much of its original architectural character. Today, Weisstannen is a stop on the Via Alpina and the starting point for numerous day hikes, including Stage 4 of the Sardona World Heritage Trail No. 73.
