Salenegg Castle Winery
The Salenegg Castle vineyard in Maienfeld is the oldest vineyard in Europe. Wine has been grown here since 1068. In addition to wine, distillates, delicatessen vinegar and cold-pressed oil are also produced.
Salenegg Castle, the oldest winery in Europe
Wine has been grown at Salenegg Castle since 1068, and the castle has been owned by the Gugelberg von Moos family since 1654. Knowledge and experience have been passed down from generation to generation with courage and foresight, together with a deep respect for nature. All products from Salenegg Castle – the wine, distillates, delicacy vinegar, and cold-pressed oil – are cultivated and produced with love, diligence, and skill in harmony with nature.
In 2020, Helene von Gugelberg initiated the largest restructuring of viticulture since 1906. In addition to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the fungus-resistant varieties Sauvignac and Cabernet blanc were planted in spring 2021. The newly planted vineyards are designed to allow for maximum biodiversity and to enable mechanical work to be carried out at a later date by autonomous vehicles. The winery was handed over to Markus von Gugelberg in 2025. Helene von Gugelberg's son is also continuing the long tradition at Schloss Salenegg, Europe's oldest winery, with the aim of constantly focusing on the latest developments in sustainability.
