The most important questions & answers about the Tamina Gorge

The Tamina Gorge and the Old Baths in Pfäfers are open seasonally. The season runs from May through October. 

Please note that access to the Tamina Gorge is not possible outside of these hours. The Tamina Gorge or the Badtobel (the access trail to the Tamina Gorge) may be closed on short notice. Therefore, please check the current accessibility.

 

You can find the latest information on road conditions on Badtobelstrasse (between Bad Ragaz and Altes Bad Pfäfers) and in the Tamina Gorge on the page Road Conditions on Badtobelstrasse.

The Tamina Gorge is accessible only on foot, by PostBus, or by horse-drawn carriage. The access road through Badtobel is closed to private vehicles. The driving ban applies to cars, motorcycles, bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters.


Postbus: A gorge bus runs from Bad Ragaz to the Old Baths in Pfäfers and to the Tamina Gorge. (Separate fares apply. GA, Half-Fare, and other public transit passes are not valid.)

On Foot
The most popular route leads from Bad Ragaz along the car-free Badtobelstrasse to the Old Baths in Pfäfers and on to the Tamina Gorge. Other hiking trails lead to the gorge from Pfäfers and Valens. In addition, there are various loop hikes that include the Tamina Gorge as a stop along the way.

Horse-Drawn Carriage
From May through October, you can book rides on the horse-drawn carriage through Badtobel to the Old Baths in Pfäfers and the Tamina Gorge.

The Tamina Gorge can be reached via various hiking trails. The most popular and most frequently used trail leads from Bad Ragaz along Badtobelstrasse to the Alte Bad Pfäfers, where the entrance to the Tamina Gorge is located.

The hike takes around 1.5 hours, depending on your starting point and walking speed.

From Bad Ragaz train station, it is 5.5 kilometers and just under 200 meters of elevation gain (one way only).

Admission to the Tamina Gorge costsCHF 5.00 per person. The price is the same for adults and children. You can purchase your ticket on site at the Altes Bad Pfäfers (at the gate near the entrance to the Tamina Gorge) and pay with cash or credit card. The access trail via Badtobel is free of charge.

No, it is prohibited to drive or ride a bicycle to the Tamina Gorge. The general driving ban begins in Bad Ragaz and applies to the Badtobel, which serves as the access road to the Tamina Gorge. This also applies to bicycles. 

For this reason, the gorge can only be reached on foot, by public bus, or by the Rössliposcht (private rides).

Yes, you can visit the Tamina Gorge with a stroller. You can pick up a key at the kiosk at the Alte Bad Pfäfers to get through the turnstile. The access path via Badtobel from Bad Ragaz is only suitable for all-terrain strollers (gravel road). The other hiking trails are not stroller-friendly.

Dogs are allowed on the Badtobelstrasse (between Bad Ragaz and the Alter Bad Pfäfers). Dogs are not allowed from the turnstile to the Tamina Gorge. We ask for your understanding.

The Alte Bad Pfäfers consists of historic buildings, most of which are accessible only by stairs. The access path via Badtobel from Bad Ragaz to the Alte Bad Pfäfers and the Tamina Gorge is not suitable for people with limited mobility. We appreciate your understanding.

Yes, it is possible to take a horse-drawn carriage ride to the Tamina Gorge via the Badtobel access road. The round-trip takes about 1.5 hours and can be booked daily from May through October. The carriage is available for a maximum of 5 hours. Admission to the gorge (CHF 5.00 per person) is not included in the price. Yes, there are both public and private tours.

Private tour: $170.00 per group, plus $4.00 admission per person. Starts at the Old Baths in Pfäfers, bookable directly online.
Public tour: Adults $25.00, children aged 6–15 $15.00, children under 5 $5.00. Booking via Heidiland Tourism.
