Sargans Mask Museum Flums
The Sargans Mask Museum in Flums displays around 200 historical and contemporary wooden masks. The exhibition is divided into three rooms and offers insights into the regional art of mask carving.
In Sarganserland, Flums, Mels and Walenstadt are considered the strongholds of mask carvers. However, this tradition, which is over 200 years old, is still practiced in other communities in the region. Around 200 historical and contemporary wooden masks are on display in the museum and showcase the typical customs of the region.
The Sarganserland Mask Museum was set up in the basement of the Flums town hall as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Sarganserland Walensee Valley Community in 2006. The exhibition is divided into three rooms. The region room contains typical masks from all eight Sarganserland municipalities. A video show tells the story of how a single wooden mask is made. In the mask history room, historical masks and valuable rarities as well as the carving tools needed to make them are on display. Finally, the third room, the room of masks, is dedicated to more recent masks by contemporary carvers.
